Lyons Township High School senior Jack Ehlert turned on the jets during his time at the IHSA Class 3A state finals. He finished 15th out of 213 runners that raced in Peoria and helped propel his team to a 16th place finish at state.
After their upset win over Walter Payton High School last week, the Friars (6-5) ran into a superior team in the second round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs, ending their season with a lopsided 28-7 loss to Hillcrest High School (10-1).
Survive and advance. That's the adage that college basketball teams say when participating in March Madness. No matter how ugly a victory may be in the NCAA tournament, the idea is to move one step closer towards a championship.

Before the IHSA regional final match on Oct. 31 against Lyons Township High School, the Oak Park and River Forest varsity volleyball team didn't look like a team about to face a conference foe who had taken them down in the first two meetings in the regular season. They brought in-game energy during warmups, ready to seek revenge and keep their season alive.

Gene Nudo is no longer the varsity head football coach at Fenwick High School. A spokesman for the school confirmed on Nov. 1 that Nudo has stepped down after he allowed convicted sex offender Frank Battaglia to assist him during the 2016 season.

All of last week, Fenwick's football team found itself surrounded by the unknown. The status of the first round of the playoffs was up in the air due to the CPS teacher strikes. Then the team lost its head coach due to his involvement in a 2016 IHSA violation. Despite the odds, Fenwick (6-4) pulled off a major upset over undefeated Walter Payton High School (8-1-1) in a 20-17 thriller on Nov. 2.

Even with their 21-14 loss to St. Ignatius College Prep on Oct. 25, the Friars are on their way to the postseason. This marks the sixth time head coach Gene Nudo has led his team to the playoffs in the eight years he has held the reigns of Fenwick's football program. However, the question remains whether the Friars will get the chance to compete on Nov. 2 against Payton College Prep as the teachers union strike against Chicago Public Schools continues to play out.

It was a loss, but in many ways the performance of the Riverside-Brookfield High School football team on Oct. 25 in their final game of the regular season was perhaps their best effort of the season. RBHS was just eight yards away from scoring a potentially game-tying touchdown before falling short 28-13 loss to four-time defending state champion Immaculate Conception on the Bulldogs' home field.

Heading into the regional round, Fenwick had high hopes for the postseason. The Friars sported an impressive 15-6-1 record and had their first win against OPRF since 2008 the week before they faced off against Muchin College Prep (13-10-1). So when Fenwick suffered a 3-0 loss on Oct. 25 to the Mountain Lions, deflating shock was felt around the Priory.

In a crosstown battle between Trinity and Fenwick high schools, the Friars (19-11) thumped the Blazers (11-17) on senior night in straight sets (25-15, 25-11). Junior Beau Vanderlaan led the charge with eight kills and two total blocks. Senior Alessia Mollo had 19 digs to go along with four aces on the night.
