Riverside resident Gretchen McCarthy was just a toddler when her uncle, Eugene Eberhardt, died. She had no memory of the 29-year-old from Chester, New Jersey, who had enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a machinist's mate first class aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941.

The Brook Park School community turned out in force on Aug. 14 to officially christen the new playground, which is the result of a two-year fundraising effort by the Brook Park Council and Brookfield-LaGrange Park School District 95. Parents and the district administration partnered to fund the roughly $258,000 playground, which features a poured-in-place synthetic rubber play surface and separate play areas for kids 2-5 and 6-12.

School is going to start all too soon. Remember how easy it was? What we needed was No. 2 pencils, a pink pearl eraser (how many of you chewed on them or ate them?), a box of Crayola crayons, a folder (can't I please have a Trapper Keeper?), a ruler, lined paper (wide-rule or college-rule depending on the grade) and we were good to go. Today it goes way beyond that -- can you say Chromebook?
