The Cook County Forest Preserve District has sent Riverside-Brookfield High School and the Chicago Zoological Society back to the drawing board after the two entities thought they'd worked out a deal that would give the school exclusive use of an athletic field immediately north of the campus.

The Easter Bunny might be a little disoriented by working in the summer, but the Rev. Dr. Gary Karwoski says that he will be at the Cornerstone Community Church, 9008 Fairview Ave. in Brookfield, early on Sunday, Aug. 23, distributing colored eggs all around the church building in preparation for an Easter egg hunt which will begin at 9 a.m.

More than 4,000 households in Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside remained without power on the morning of Aug. 11, more than 16 hours after a powerful storm with high winds blew through the area beginning around 4 p.m. on Aug. 10.

The teachers union at Riverside-Brookfield High School is taking a strong stand against the use of a third-party provider for remote learning and has harshly criticized District 208 Superintendent Kevin Skinkis for his decision to use a company called Apex Learning to provide computerized instruction for those who choose 100-percent remote learning.

On Aug. 5, Riverside Elementary School District 96 became the final local school district to adopt a plan for starting school this year in the midst of a pandemic. The hybrid plan features part-time, in-person attendance for those who wish that and a fully remote option for those who do not feel it is safe to send their children back to school.

Two more local school districts have announced they will begin the school year by having students attend classes remotely. Komarek Elementary School District 94 announced its intentions on July 31, while Lyons Township High School District 204 notified families with a letter to parents on Aug. 4.
