The Nazareth Academy baseball team has won convincingly with balance all season. The Roadrunners’ combination of pitching, defense and hitting were all on display during a sweep of UIC Prep and Marian Central on May 4 in La Grange Park. The host Roadrunners (20-4) outscored their opponents by a combined score of 24-6.
In the opener, Nazareth coasted to an 11-1 victory over UIC Prep. Pitchers Jack Doss and Gunnar Hendrix held the Firecats to one hit over five innings. Teddy Olander and Davey Hertogs also pitched well in the second game, a 13-5 win against Marian Central.
Offensively, Eric Kramer (2 hits, 2 runs scored) and Wylger Guido (triple, 2 RBIs) led the way against UIC Prep. Against Marian Central, Nate Smith hit a three-run homer, Zach Carmignani had three hits and scored four runs, Andrew McKenna drove in five runs, and Olander added two hits as the Roadrunners compiled 16 hits overall.
“This team has a nice mix of veteran leaders and youth,” coach Lee Milano said. “We have a lot of options on the mound, a lot of good hitters, and we possess excellent team speed.”
LTHS baseball
The Lions swept a conference doubleheader against Downers Grove North by scores of 5-1 and 7-0. Pitching was the name of the game for LTHS as Eric Steensma and Mike Walsh each earned a complete-game win against the visiting Trojans. Steensma scattered five hits and struck out nine in the opener, while Walsh tossed a three-hitter with 10 punchouts in the second game.
Thomas Remijas powered the offense with four hits in eight at-bats. Patrick Machaj went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in Game 1. Charlie Brizz drove in two runs in Game 2.
RBHS girls track & field
The Bulldogs’ Tara Janney, Brenna Loftus and Olivia Beener placed well in multiple events at the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division, hosted by Elmwood Park over the weekend.
Janney finished third in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12 minutes, 12.33 seconds and seventh (5:45.63) in the 1,600.
Loftus fared well in long jump at 14 feet, 5-5 inches and triple jump 31 feet, 1-25 inches to record a pair of fourth-place finishes. She also took sixth in the 100 at 13.60, finishing just behind teammate Sylvia Harvin at 13.50.
In other field events, Beener was a runner-up in discus with a throw of 87-0.5. She notched fifth in the shot put with a measurement of 26-11.50.
Harvin also earned fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:04.05.
In other notable results, senior Nadia Kaczmarz was fifth in the 1,600 (5:44.84) and freshman Remy Hilpp took fourth in the pole vault (7-1).
Junior Selena Axinte led the Bulldogs in hurdles, finishing eighth in the 300 hurdles (57.23) and ninth in the 100 hurdles (20.69).
Fenwick girls soccer
Juliana Giuffre scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Anissa Nourse to lift the Friars past visiting Oak Park and River Forest 1-0. Goalkeepers Audrey Hinrichs and Mary Heneghan combined to post the Friars’ 10th shutout this season. Led by senior captain Margaux Shearer, the defense also excelled against the Huskies.
Since a 4-4 start, the Friars are unbeaten in seven matches with six wins and a tie against Mother McAuley.
“We’ve been playing quality soccer as a team,” Nourse said. “We want to continue to improve our communication as a team so we can connect more passes and make the correct runs. Our team has been working very hard at practice and we hope to finish the season strong.”
LTHS girls soccer
The Lions capped off the regular season with a West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship. LTHS went 6-0 in conference play, outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 20-1.
The Lions, the No. 1 seed in the Glenbard East Sectional, begin postseason play against the winners of Hubbard vs. Kennedy at home on Wednesday, May 15 at 4 p.m. With a victory, the Lions will advance to their own regional final on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m.
Fenwick boys water polo
The Friars defeated Loyola Academy 13-11 in the championship game of the Metro Catholic Aquatic Conference tourney on Saturday in Oak Park.
Payton Comstock, who will attend the U.S. Naval Academy in the fall, scored six goals and Nate Fisher added four to power the Friars’ offense. Dan Badja, Alex Figus and Ramses Flores scored a goal each.
In the semifinals, Fenwick (27-3) cruised to a 10-4 win over St. Patrick. The Friars established a 6-0 lead at halftime and never looked back as Comstock scored a team-high four goals. Dan Lynch and Jack Nettleton scored twice and Diego Sahagun dished out two assists.
