Sister Marianne Race CSJ, a resident of Brookfield, will be honored next month by Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park as one of the school’s Four Pillars Award recipients.
The awards are given annually to alumni and those connected with Nazareth who are thriving in their communities or careers and continue to represent the school’s four pillars of Scholarship, Service, Spirit and Unity.
Race, a 1957 graduate of Nazareth, and three others will be honored at a special Mass on Sept. 28 in the Congregation of St. Joseph Chapel.
The school will present the Unity Award to Race, who has served in many roles at Nazareth Academy –as a student, teacher, administrator and current board member.
According to a press release from the school, “Her visionary thinking and dutiful stewardship are invaluable to the growth and stability of Nazareth and her influence can be seen and felt in every area of campus.”
On board
Brookfield resident Chris Crisanti has been named to his second term as west suburban vice chairman on the executive board of the Cook County Young Democrats.
Board members serve two-year terms, and executive board members may serve until age 35 (pending re-election every two years), where they are termed out due to age.
The Cook County Young Democrats are a political organization “purposed to foster, promote and develop responsible and efficient local government and to encourage young people in every community in Cook County to actively participate in civic political activities and give support to candidates for public office who have been approved by the Regular Democratic Organization.”
Crisanti is also chairman of the Brookfield Democratic Organization.
On the list
In July, the folks at Chicago Magazine listed the Top 100 real estate teams, based on residential sales in the Chicago metro six-county area. Riverside-based Burlington Realty, which is part of the @properties group, was ranked No. 45 on the list.

Music magic
Musicians participating in the North Riverside Parks and Rec’s Jammin’ on Sundays program took first place in two different musical competitions this summer. The Guitar Ensemble, including program participants Emily Draper and Connie Kovco as well as local guitarists Peter Para, Jocelyn Lukas, Rebecca Padilla and Maria Quiroz placed first at the 59th Annual Music Association Competition in June The ensemble was directed by Archie and Joan Pellillo.
The ensemble of Kovco, Para and Quiroz also competed at the Grandquist Music Competition in Geneva in June, taking first place. Jaclyn Lukas placed second on accordion.
On campus
Ryan Kunish, of Riverside, was among more than 700 graduates receiving degrees from the University of Nebraska during summer commencement ceremonies on Aug. 17 in Lincoln. Kunish earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In a commencement ceremony on Aug. 16, Patricia Russell, of Brookfield, received a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences from the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard.
Caleb Clark and Joshua Clark, both of Riverside have graduated from Wheaton College. Caleb Clark graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics, while Joshua Clark graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology.
North Riverside resident Gabrielle Ulloa and Riverside residents Nick Fucinato and Amanda Hejna were among the nearly 7,000 students receiving degrees during the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s spring commencement ceremonies in May.
Ulloa received a doctor of pharmacy degree, Hejna received a Master of Public Affairs degree and Fucinato received a Bachelor of Arts degree in legal studies.
Sarah Javors, of Riverside, graduated from Hofstra University in Hampstead, New York, in May, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.
Brian Kulaga, of Riverside, was among the nearly 1,400 students awarded degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in May. Kulaga earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in management.
Riverside resident Shannon Grehan graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance and accounting and a minor in Spanish from the University of South Carolina in May.
Alexander Brumlik, of Riverside, a student at Northern Vermont University, was named to the president’s list for the spring 2019 semester. Students who achieve a 4.0 semester grade-point average on a 4-point scale are placed on the president’s list.
Kelly Vences, of Brookfield, was among the Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin) students earning dean’s list recognition for the 2018-19 academic year for attaining a GPA of at least 3.5 for the year.
Brookfield residents Alise J. Battistoni (early childhood special education), Taylor V. Klein (air traffic control management), Diana E. Lekkas (organizational leadership) and Megan A. Troesch (marketing) and Riverside resident Danny Zontos (aviation flight management) were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Lewis University in Romeoville for attaining a semester GPA of at least 3.5.
Amber L. Troesch, of Brookfield, and Selene Anaya and Jack Faje, of Riverside, were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota for attaining a semester GPA of at least 3.66.
Andrew Salij, of Riverside, a chemistry major at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, was named to the school’s dean’s list for the 2019 spring semester for attaining a GPA of at least 3.75.
Brookfield resident Rachel Bast was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights for achieving a GPA of at least 3.5.
Killian Elwart, of Brookfield, was named to the honor roll for the 2019 spring semester at the University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh for earning a semester GPA of at least 3.3.
Brookfield resident Autumn Rajcevich-Schwer and Riverside resident Alyssa Schwarz were among the 190 student athletes at Carthage College in Kenosha receiving the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Academic All-Conference honors for the winter and spring seasons of the 2018-19 school year.
Noah Briones, of Riverside, spent two weeks in July studying with more than 50 other musicians at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, at the academy’s intensive, performance-based Symphony Session. Briones, a student at Riverside-Brookfield High School, and his fellow students performed seven concerts alongside their teachers in front of paying concertgoers.
Riverside-Brookfield High School junior Peter Giannetos has been named to the technical crew for the 2020 Illinois High School Theater Festival’s production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida,” which will be performed in January at Illinois State University. The production features a select ensemble of the top high school actors, technicians and musicians from throughout Illinois.
