JoAnne Kosey was sworn in for a third term as president of the Riverside Township Lions Club by District 1A Governor Howard Swacker at the club’s annual installation dinner June 11 in the Scottish Home in North Riverside.

Kosey is also a regular columnist for the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark.

New officers who were sworn in Robert J. Lifka, second vice president, and Frank Gangware, third vice president. Remaining in their positions are Andy Sitkiewicz, first vice president; Dave Moravecek, treasurer; and Chuck Courtney, secretary.

Others installed are Chet Biedron, tail twister, and Jon Jansky, Lion tamer.

Elected to one-year terms on the Board of Directors were Tom Sisulak, Eric Sundstrom, Dr. Jay Van Cura and Adam Yurkiw.  Elected to two-year terms were Diane Ceragioli, Brian Ganan, Joe Kosey, John O’Brien and Pat Pavlich.

Permanent directors are Jerry Kosik, Donald McDowell, Walter Pierce, Bill Scanlon, Jansky, Jack Wiaduck, Olga Sylvester, Joe Dvorak IV and Alex Gallegos.

The Riverside Township Lions Club annually donates to organizations that provide services to the visually impaired and the hearing impaired, as well as to organizations that assist children and adults who are disabled or have special needs.

 

I’d be honored

Illinois state Rep. Michael Zalewski (D-23rd) has been named Legislator of the Year by the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association for “being a tireless defender of the interests of landscape professionals and small business owners across the state of Illinois,” according to press release from the organization.

Zalewski is a resident of Riverside and has been a member of the Illinois General Assembly since 2008.

 

On campus

Brookfield resident Rachel Carson, a master’s student in the Advanced Inquiry Program from Miami (Ohio) University’s Project Dragonfly, will travel to India and study the ecological, cultural and spiritual landscapes of the Western Ghats.

Project Dragonfly’s graduate courses provide opportunities for students to engage in firsthand educational and scientific research at critical conservation field sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas.

Brookfield resident Alexa Bissell was among those awarded degrees at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa in May. Bissell graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. Bissell also was named to the spring semester dean’s list.

Julia Waterloo, of Brookfield, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mary from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota.

The following local residents received degrees during commencement exercises at Elmhurst College in May: Brookfield residents Kristen Becktel (BA psychology), John Buhle (BA information technology), Rena Cerny (BS management), Susan Funk (MPH public health), Michelle Gallardo (BS accounting), Adam Garr (BS computer science), Ashley Lams (BSN nursing) and Caitlin Rusen (BS marketing); North Riverside residents Ricardo Herrera (BA music) and Beidy Marchland (MSN nursing); and Riverside resident Jordin Duda (BS psychology).

Mayra Baeza, of Brookfield, was among about 1,900 undergraduates receiving their degrees from the University of Dayton during the spring 2019 commencement ceremony. Baeza was also named to the dean’s list for the 2019 spring semester.

Among those receiving undergraduate degrees from the University of Iowa in May were Brookfield residents Giamarie Destefano (BBA accounting), Veronica Sanchez (BA communication studies), Ajla Smajlovic (BA health and human physiology) and Michael McCabe (BA health and human physiology) and Riverside resident Madeline Brom (BA communication studies).

Robert Peugh, of Brookfield, was among the roughly 3,800 students receiving degrees during Georgia Tech University’s commencement exercises in May in Atlanta. Peugh earned a Bachelor of Science in materials science and engineering.

Richard Hertogs, of Riverside, was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for earning a semester grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale.

Riverside residents Evan Jones and Nicole LaBelle were named to the president’s list for the second semester of the 2018-19 school year at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, for being ranked in the top 3 percent of undergraduate students within their divisions.

Jack Sagan, of Riverside, was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Central College in Pella, Iowa for achieving a GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield residents Phoebe Hartoonian and Elizabeth Strzelczyk and Riverside residents Ryan Kodama and Isabelle Legan were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Iowa State University for earning a GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield residents Gina CrisantiColin Riordan and Hunter Soumar; North Riverside resident Isabel Zavala; and Riverside resident Hannah Michl were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Dayton for achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 for the semester.

North Riverside resident Camila Davila, Brookfield resident Conor Berek and Riverside resident DiAngelo Gonzalez were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Augustana College in Rock Island for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield residents Lydia Olson and Brittney Paeth were named to the 2019 spring semester president’s for achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs at the University of Alabama.

Riverside resident Charlie Marcou was named to the dean’s list at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

Sara Sifferman, of Brookfield, was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for earning a GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield resident Mariah Dorsey was named to the dean’s list for the 2019 spring semester at Aurora University for earning a GPA of at least 3.6.

Quincy (Illinois) University named Brookfield resident Jeremy Heer to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list for earning a semester GPA of at least 3.5.

Erika Sterner, a senior mathematics major in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska, was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list for attaining a GPA of at least 3.75.

Samantha Doornebos and Sarah Javors, both of Riverside, were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, for earning a GPA of at least 3.5 for the semester.

Riverside residents Alyssa Schwarz and Trevor Bork along with Brookfield resident Autumn Rajcevich-Schwer were named to the dean’s list at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for the 2019 spring semester.

Grace C. Tucek, of Riverside, was named to the 2019 spring semester president’s list at Clemson (South Carolina) University for earning a perfect GPA of 4.0 for the semester. Tucek is a political science major.

In addition, Riverside resident Coulter W. Greenwell, a financial management major, was named to the dean’s list for attaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

Among those named to the dean’s list at the University of Iowa for the 2019 spring semester were Riverside residents Jake VaiaAnna MillekerCaroline Willinger and Sara LaMantia and Brookfield residents Alyse Malikowski and Alex Contreras.

Gloria Corona, of Brookfield, was named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Findlay (Ohio) for attaining a GPA of least 3.5.

Abigail Hosack, of Brookfield, has made the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s 2019 spring semester dean’s list for earning a GPA of at least 3.4 for the semester.

Named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Marquette University in Milwaukee were Riverside residents Haley Legan (biomedical sciences), Margaret Lyons (nursing), Riley Mullen (criminology/law studies), Jonathan Ricchio (civil engineering) and Lucille Roudebush (exercise physiology).  

Caleb Clark, of Riverside, and Jeremiah Clarkson, of Brookfield, were named to the 2019 spring semester dean’s list at Wheaton College.

Several local students were named to the honor rolls at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park for the second semester of the 2018-19 school year.

Named to the A Honor Roll were Brookfield residents Grace Acosta, Gwenyth Acosta, Leilani Dodson, Gunnar Hendrix and David Sullivan and Riverside residents Carlie Merola and Elizabeth Pilarz. 

Named to the B Honor Roll were Brookfield residents Ashley Gamboa and Elijah Pesek; North Riverside resident Diego Arroyo; and Riverside residents Michael Almeida, Griffin Hartnett, David Hertogs and Justin Rokicki.

Brookfield resident Justin Backus was elected Student Council secretary for the Class of 2021 at Lyons Township High School for the 2019-20 school year.

A pair of Brookfield residents have been named to the staff of the Lion, the student newspaper at Lyons Township High School for the 2019-20 school year. Alfonso Fernandez, who will be a senior next year, and Adriana Serrano-Matsumoto, who will be a junior, both will be reporters for the publication.
